Coffee and Reconcilitation in Rwanda: March 14 - 23, 2008

This ten-day tour will focus first on the history and political context of Rwanda, followed by an in-depth look at the struggle and hope created through the burgeoning coffee industry. Finally, we'll wind up our adventure in Rwanda with a visit to the must-see Volcanoes National Park - home to the Mountain Gorillas.

Tour Highlights:

  • Meet with farmers to understand how coffee is offering hope to Rwandans
  • Official briefing at the United States Embassy about the current political and economic situation in Rwanda
  • Visit several Genocide memorial and educational centers
  • Experience the spectacular Volcanoes National Park ? and see the Mountain Gorillas

Nicaragua: Women in Coffee Encounter, 2008 (dates to be confirmed)

2008 marks the fifth anniversary of the first women in coffee tour to Nicaragua. This seven-day tour will take the group back to beautiful Jinotega, Nicaragua, home of the Soppexcca Cooperative. Soppexcca's general manager is a dyanmic women, Fatima Ismael, who is recognized for implementing innovative programs that have made an import impact on gender equality, women's health and children's well-being. Over 30% of Soppexcca's members are women, and a number of women hold leadership roles in the cooperative.

Tour Highlights:

  • Meet with women farmers to understand their challenges and successes with coffee production and in their communities
  • Participate in the entire coffee process with the women farmers - from farm to cup!
  • Join the women for their annual celebration of the harvest
  • Visit beautiful colonial Granada, on Lake Nicaragua to take in the sights and culture
